National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) - A Brief Outline
The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), a draft of which was approved
by the Union Cabinet of India on 29 July 2020, replaces the National Policy on Education of 1986.
The new National Education Policy 2020 (NEP
2020) outlines the vision of India's new education system. The new policy replaces the previous National Policy on Education, 1986. The NEP 2020 envisages transforming
India's education system
by 2030.
The Policy envisages a new curricular and pedagogical structure for school education that is responsive and
relevant to the needs and interests of learners at different stages of their
development. National Education Policy 2020 aims to shape an education system
that benefits all of India's children. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is
hopeful that the new NEP 2020 will increase thirst for knowledge in schools and
help in removing pressure on mark sheets for students.
Why National Education Policy
Policies are important because they help a school establish rules and
procedures and create standards of quality for learning and safety, as well as
expectations and accountability. Without these, schools, colleges, universities
would lack the structure and academic guideline. The National Education Policy would
help to function and provide the necessary educational needs of students.
For the first time the Government of India framed a National Policy on Education in
1986 which was later modified in 1992. Its major objective was to provide education to all sections of
society, with a particular focus on scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other
backward classes and women, who were deprived of educational opportunities for centuries.
Changes in the new National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020)
Education Policy in
India has been changed after a long period of 34 years. According to the National Education Policy 2020, Govt will phase
out the affiliation of colleges in 15 years and a stage-wise mechanism will be
established for granting graded autonomy to colleges. Under NEP 2020, there
will be no rigid separations between arts and sciences, between curricular and
extra-curricular activities, between vocational and academic streams.
The
remarkable things about the New Education Policy 2020 are as follows:
5 YEARS FUNDAMENTALS
1. Nursery at 4 Years Old.
2. Junior KG at 5 Years Old.
3. Senior KG at 6 Years Old.
4. Class 1 at 7 Years Old.
5. Class 2 at 8 Years Old.
3 YEARS PREPARATORY
6. Class 3 at 9 Years Old.
7. Class 4 at 10 Years Old.
8. Class 5 at 11 Years Old.
3 YEARS MIDDLE
9. Class 6 at 12 Years Old.
10. Class 7 at 13 Years Old.
11. Class 8 at 14 Years Old.
4 YEARS SECONDARY
12. Class 9 at 15 Years Old.
13. Class 10 at 16 Years Old.
14. Class 11 at 17 Years Old.
15. Class 12 at 18 Years Old.
OTHER IMPORTANT CHANGES
- There will be Board Exam in Class 12 only. Whereas earlier, it was mandatory to take Board Exams in Class 10, which will not happen now.
- 4 Years of College Degree.
- No more Class 10 Board Exam.
- M.Phil Degree will be abolished.
- Now students up to Class 5 will be taught in Mother Tongue, Local Language and National Language only. The rest of the subjects, even if they are English, will be taught as a subject.
- Examinations will be done in the Semester form from Class 9 to 12 standard.
- Schooling will be done under the 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 formula. (see table above).
- College Degree will be of 3 and 4 years course.
- Certificate will be given on the First year of Graduation, Diploma on the Second year and Degree in the Third year.
- 3 Years Degree is for those students who do not have to take Higher Education. At the same time, students doing Higher Education will have to pursue 4 Years Degree.
- Students pursuing 4 Years Degree will be able to do Master's Degree in one year.
- Now, students will not have to pursue M.Phil rather, MA students will now be able to pursue PhD directly.
- Students will be able to do other courses in between.
- Same rules will be applicable for all Government, Private and Deemed Institutions.
OTHER REFORMS UNDER NEW
EDUCATION POLICY 2020
Gross enrollment ratio will be 50 percent by 2035 in Higher Education. At the same time, under the new Education Policy Rule 2020, if a student wants to pursue another course in the middle of a course, then, he/she can take a second course by taking a break for a limited time from the first course.
Many reforms have also
been made in the Higher Education. Improvements include graded academic,
administrative and financial autonomy etc.
Apart from this, the new National Education Policy Rule 2020 (NEP 2020) has recommended for e-courses to be started in Regional Languages. Virtual Laboratory will be developed. A National Educational Scientific Forum (NESF) will be started.
